I just took delivery of my first bolt action rifle, a Rem 700 5R .308. I have never shot anything in .308, and my formal marksmanship training to date consists of attending an Appleseed event this past December (I'm going to another in February and hope to qualify).
I am still scope hunting, and am seriously considering making an investment in an F1. What other equipment is recommended to attend and participate in a CAPRC monthly match/event?
I really like the GI web sling I learned to use at Appleseed. Is that an appropriate sling for CAPRC? Do I need a bipod yet? I frequently see the Harris 6-9" with the swivel and swivel lock recommended. I've got a shooting mat on back order. I've got a box of FGMM 168g in hand and 5 more on back order, hopefully will have by February. What else do I need? (I'm putting off reloading equipment for the immediate future, but I know everyone is going to tell me I'm insane not to do it eventually).
I still need to learn all about getting DOPE and all the related calculations. Green precision shooter here!
Some members here recommended I just show up and jump in, including getting my scope zeroed. I'm fine with that, as long as I won't be getting in anyone's way. Help getting me settled in with this rifle would be very much appreciated!
Thanks!
Jeff

Bring a willingness to learn, an open mind, and a smile
But seriously, you might want to bring a bipod, sling, possibly a rear bag and get good solid DOPE for your rifle.
BTW, I have a good deal on a rear bag in the for sale section if your interested.

Get the bipod with lock. Get alot more ammo. The GI sling will be fine, we don't use them much except for the occational seated or unsupported prone (like you did in Appleseed.) I would get some sort of rear bag, of fill a sock half way with peagravel for a rear rest. Someone will be able to give you aproximate dope for your .308, but you will need to eventually confirm it with live fire.

You will want a Harris S-BRM bipod with a locking lever of some sort.
Have someone experienced help you with a proper cheekweld and setting the scope on the gun properly.
It's common to need a cheekrest spacer of some sort.
The Eagle stock pack works well as you can add spacers under it until your cheekweld is perfect.
Once the cheekweld is correct, then you can re-mount the scope into the proper position.
Besides a bean bag for under the back of the stock, dry fire a lot.
I have "standard 308" dope cards that you can print out here:

God shoots a Remington 700, drives a Chevy Truck and carries a Glock 19.
I don't do any of those things.

If you haven't bought them already don't skimp on your base and rings either, get a Seekins or Badger 20 MOA Picatinny rail and Badger, Seekins or TPS rings for your scope.
My 5R has come a long way (thanks to the advice of the guys here) since I bought it as my first "LR" rifle 4 years ago...

Re: What do I need to bring to my first match?
Welcome Jeff, looking forward to stressing you out (just a little) at your first match.
I have two maybe three TIS quick cuff slings, two shooting mats and some rear bags
that I will part with at a fair price if you are interested. I even have a large blackhawk pack.
The advise and information that you receive on this forum is from some very good
shooters and people in general.
If you are not quit ready to compete at this months match, then I would suggest you
come out and help spot and score. You will learn more then you think, and it's a great
way to meet the crew.

I'd wait on the F1 investment for a few more weeks at least. NF is coming out with the Beast and you would probably be able to get the F1 at a better price.
