CaPRC Marksmanship Clinic "A" 5-20-12
Posted: Wed Mar 28, 2012 9:27 am
by AR15barrels
Come on out and join us at Angeles for our new precision rifle shooter orientation on Sunday May 20th.
We will teach how to get behind the gun/scope, attaining proper eye relief, using the features of the scope and natural point of aim.
Then we will check your zero at 100yds and get the knobs set to zero and work on the basics of marksmanship.
The course curriculum was written by a former USMC scout sniper instructor.
This is a beginning precision rifle shooter clinic so we will concentrate on basic marksmanship as it is the basis of all future learning.
This will be shot at 100yds.
Fees are $50 for non members or $40 for club members.
The entry fee covers the classroom session, cold drinks and BBQ lunch.
We will limit this to 30 shooters as that gives us a full firing line.
Plan on a full day as the schedule has us shooting until at least 4pm.
You may attend the classroom portion as a non-shooter and then observe the shooting portion of the day for a reduced $20 non-shooter fee.
Tentative schedule as follows:
8:30 Sign-in at hunters education classroom
9:00 Classroom session at hunters education clasroom
11:45 move to the rifle line and safety briefing
12:00 verify, correct and zero knobs at 100yds (10 rds)
12:30 BBQ lunch break
1:00 open shooting time with instruction
Some things to bring:
Precision rifle wearing a scope with target knobs, eye/ear protection, sunscreen, chamber flag, 80 rounds of match quality ammo, shooting mat or blanket, bipod, some kind of rear bag or sand sock, small notepad and a pencil or pen to take notes.
Bring what you have, don't worry too much about what you don't have.
We always make do with what we have.
This is a
Precision Rifle event so if the gun/scope/ammo is not capable of shooting tight groups, it will detract from your overall experience at the shoot.
If possible, please have your rifle zeroed at 100yds and your knobs set to zero.
We will verify a correct zero at the shoot, but it takes time that is better spent putting rounds on targets.
RSVP's for CaPRC club members will be accepted after 12 noon on Monday 5/14/12.
RSVP's for non club members will be accepted after 12 noon on Wednesday 5/16/12.
RSVP by posting "I will be there" in this thread to get on the shooters list.
Any shooter RSVP's posted before those times will be ignored or deleted.
We are also looking for experienced club members to show up and help instruct.
If you are able to help on the line, please RSVP anytime.

I would really love to get in to precision shooting, I will definitely try to register on the 16t. But one questions, does the $50 include the range fee at Angeles?

Randall, Brad, and Charlie,
Someone just posted this on Calguns on the Clinic A announcement:
My wife and I would LOVE to come, but it's going to depend on whether our newborn (1 week old yesterday!) is doing well enough that she can stay with the babysitter by then. We'll know by the time registration opens.
Only other problem....I've got an AR308 (Black Hole Weaponry 20" SS/Geissele SSA-E/Vortex Viper PST 4-16 FFP MIL), and she's got a complimentary SDM-R inspired spotter's rifle (WOA 20" SDMR, Geissele SSA-E/TA11F), but that ACOG is the only optic we've got left. I'm assuming it's not kosher, right? (No target knobs, not really a "precision" sight, etc)
I presume HIS AR308 BHW SSAE VVPST FFP MILMIL R2D2 is fine, but I don't know if HER SDMR WOA SSAE TA11F C3PO is.
My general response to questions like this is to tell people to bring whatever they have, but you guys are running the clinic and I wanted to check with you first. Should I tell him her ACOG without the turret caps on is all right for the clinic or does he need a scope with target knobs?

I would think if its only 100yds it should be fine. All about the basics anyways. But like you said its not our rodeo.
"C3PO" thats funny!

Yeah, that was me. Thanks for crossposting. Sorry for the gobbleygook. ;)
Like I said, it's mostly dependent on whether our newborn is doing well enough we can get away for a day, but *IF* that works out, would the ACOG work? Alternatively, I might be able to beg/borrow a scope off a buddy.
Let me know whenever. I'm in no rush.

I've been wanting to hit up one of you guys' events for a while now.

I can tell you from experience that a 3.5 or 4x magnification is not going to be enough magnification to fully benefit from what we are teaching.
Acog's are not parallax adjustable either which will cause inaccuracy.
I would suggest that both the husband and wife share his 308 as it has a more appropriate scope.
I think that we will be doing odd and even shooter groups and that makes it possible for two people to share a rifle.

Hi All,
First time posting on this forum.
My question is like the ACOG one.
Would a 16" free floated 5.56mm with eotech and a 3x magnifier be ok for this shoot?
Its a regular eotech no BDC reticle. Thanks.

We'll still have to see how my wife's feeling, but I'm good to go as long as there's room! (Just saying informally. I read the OP. I'll actually reserve my spot at the appropriate time ;))

So semi-autos are okay for this shoot?
I've got an M1A with a Leupold Mark 4 4-16x...would that work?

That will work if its an accurate rifle.

I'm less worried about my rifle, more worried about by ammo. Due to budgetary crap, I'm limited to my stock on hand of Federal American Eagle 150gr.

Thats not going to cut it. We cant teach you to shoot 1/2" targets at 100 yards if the ammo wont do but a few inches. Have you shot this ammo for groups and what size are they?

Im new enough to this I can't tell which anomalies are my fault and which are the ammo's, honestly. Which I'm assuming *is* the problem, right? If you can't tell what's the ammo and what's the shooter, how can you know when/what you're doing wrong?
Last time I shot I averaged about 1-1.25 MOA. (5-8 shot groups) Some were better, some were worse. Best was .625", but that was only a 3 shot group (and I know those are very often misleading).
Looking around my normal sources (PSA, SGA, AIM, etc) it looks like out of the match ammo choices, federal gold metal match is actually the most affordable. Does that sound right to you guys, or am I looking at the wrong things/in the wrong places?

Exactly. When we are teaching, all we can do is judge/guess what you are doing wrong by where the bullet impacts the target. The more factors that are moving that bullet around, the harder it is to pinpoint what you are doing. Removing as many variables is key.

I should go with 168s even though the 175s are the same price? What I've been reading is they're better out to 800y or so but 175s rule past that?

If the 175's are the same then buy them. Usually the 168's are a bit cheaper. This clinic is only out to 100 thats why I said the 168's were fine. Dont worry about the questions.. You have to learn somehow..
