800, 900 & 1000yds this weekend
The tri county rifle club holds it's monthly practice and match this weekend in Cuyama, CA.
Cuyama is southwest of Taft.
It's about 110 miles northwest from the santa clarita area.
Practice starts around 9am saturday.
They have a 1000yd match on sunday morning.
Some of the tri-county club members usualy camp out at the range and there's a BBQ pit and woodstove there for such occaisions.
I believe it's $8 for the practice and maybe a bit more for the match.
They have F Class targets that they will put up for the F Class shooters.
This is a great way to learn about shooting in the wind as every shot is pulled and parked.
Shooters take turns shooting and then marking targets in the pit throughout the day.
I won't be able to make it this month as my day-job has me out of town, but if you would like to go, I can get you the specific location details.

God shoots a Remington 700, drives a Chevy Truck and carries a Glock 19.
I don't do any of those things.

I cant go either but encourage anyone that can go to try and make it. The first Palma match that I shot at Camp Pendleton (same format as this shoot) really taught me a lot on how to read wind and helped to make me a much better shooter. Its much better than going out to the desert to practice long range since the wind flags are set up allready and your target is being pulled after each shot.

I will be there and I will not be able to camp, so I will have to drive back/forth for the practice and match. If anyone wants to come on Saturday, let me know and you can ride with me from Santa Clarita or I will PM you directions to the range... P.S. there is no shade or water or facilities on this range, plan accordingly...

It's $8 for the match on Sunday also IIRC. I should be there.
I need to load some ammo. I just opened my last 500 pack of 142 grain SMK's.

Mike, I am going right by your place, so I can pick you up... (and get my Eagle thingy). I need to be home for 6pm, so I will leave around 3:45-4pm. Takes about 2 hours to get there and we would need to be there by 10am, so I would be at your place at 8am.... Let me know if you want to do it...GforceJunkie wrote:Thinking about the Saturday practice...

Re: 800, 900 & 1000yds this weekend
Ok, all you slackers missed an excellent day of practice shooting long range from 800 to 1000. Winds were very switchy and it was challenging to catch the changes. Winds were pretty consistant 5-7 from 800-900 and then 14 at the 1k line. Met LAFD Bob (Robert Hode) B. and Micheal ended up working the pits for us. We each shot about 50 rounds. My last shots at 1k were a different load of .4grs more of IMR 4895 for a total of 45.4 and out of the 9 shots, there were 8 10's/2x and one 7 (broke that shot early as I was settling into my position) seems to hold wind more consistantly... shoots almost 100 fps faster than my normal load. Bob left right after shooting and I stayed about another hour.. Home by 5pm....
Next month will be the 14th and 15th of May (same w/e as the NM match.) So those that are not shooting in NM should come out with me to shoot this match. It will be an F Class match with 800, 900, and 1000 yard targets 15 shots each with sighters before each string. I am off that w/e, so I will probably end up camping at the range on Saturday night, but practice on Saturday and match on Sun...
Be there or be square...

Steve, I think that May is the club's work weekend and so there is no match then.

BTW, the match was two, twenty shot strings at 1,000 yards. Odd numbered months are Palma, even numbered months are F class.

Yep, took one of the new guys from Bakersfield who used his 20" AR-308 and 168 Federal match loads. They didn't always arrive pointy end first.
I shot 382 as the wind got pretty gusty and twitchy for the second half of the match. Even Brenda (US Nat Women's Champ) dropped like 10 points on the second relay.
