This rain is pissing me off!

Post by MichaelV »

I've got the finest piece of precision gear sitting in my safe and hand loaded ammo in my ammo can... and the rain keeps coming.

I keep thinking I should just go to ASR but the rain keeps on coming down harder.

Today is a perfect day for reloading, cleaning and organizing gear and honey-do projects so you get some honey-do credits to turn in when the weather is nice.

I can't reload. Don't have a garage so my reloading equipment is out on the patio. Have a waterproof tarp covering everything and there's enough roof cover to protect the gear but not enough to cover me from the rain.

Hoping for a break in the rain so I can reload some ammo for the 24th.

I would not bet on it.
If it rains every day up through the 23rd, the roads into the spot are not going to be passable and the ground is going to be too wet to lay on.

It needs to dry out for at least a couple days before we can shoot at the spot.

I just finished reloading for my 416 Barrett. When the rain stops I'll be ready for some fun. I'm curious to see how this loads are going to perform.

So basically your saying that your hair might get wet so you don't wanna go? ;)

My truck will make it up the road and we can lay on tarps. As long as its not down pouring ill be there. An ez-up will help if there's a light tinkle. I just wanna have some fun!!!

And this is the best group I got so far, with my load. For this gun to get it to shoot well, you need to load for it. The factory loads suck big time.

Nice rifle Christian! I'm not too familiar with the .416-- interested to see what you can do with it. How far have you shot it? Do you take it to ASR?

I do take it to ASR, but usually I’m all the way at the end of the line. I shot it at ASR at 600 Yds. I was planning on going this Monday but with this rain looks like it’s not going to happen.
Right now I’m in between developing some loads for it, but as soon as I’m done (and I should be done very quickly) I’ll take it to about 2400 Yds.

If it keeps raining like this, I'll have to seriously consider breaking out the IBS.

The problem with shooting the squirrels is that there are apartments and a school behind my property where the critters are likely to end up.
Dead squirrels all around my property are going to raise attention that I don't need.

For some random reason, today I was thinking of the spot and that we should build an actual shooting platform... Pour 6 or 9 small footers, some 4x6 main support joyces and 2x4 or 2x6 joyce on some hangers, then 2x6 decking, seal it and call it a day. Would there be a worry of having it torn out since it's BLM Land or what do you think?

Maybe if the space relocated a bit off the beaten path... just thinking out loud. What are the rough dimensions the platform could be, 18x10? I forget how much room is up there.

Could probably do it more economically and this is overbuilt, but here's an idea. Could be done with 4x instead of 6x but the added strength vs. cost would be worth it imo.

Build List:

4x6x10 (3x) Main Joyce $13.50 per = $40.50
2x6x8 (10x) Joyce $3.40 per = $34.00
2x6x10 (26x) Decking $4.30 per = $111.80
2x4x10 (2x) Decking $2.70 per = $5.40

Total: $192

im pretty sure there would be problems with building something like that on BLM land.

Yea figures, well if we know someone with private land it's always an option.

Are you guys going up the spot or Angeles? I was possibly going to go Angeles on Friday morning to zero my new TRS-1 since my Nikon went down...

Haven't thought too much sadly, but still want to go if I can make it happen.

I was referring to pigeons, but hell squirrels would be fun too. Too bad I dont have any of those tree critters running around my neighborhood.

The only way to add improvements to BLM land is to lease it...and as you can see from the attached regulations that process is time consuming and costly.
