Post by AR15barrels »

The California Precision Rifle Club is proud to announce their next centerfire match will be Sunday September 22nd at the Angeles Ranges.
For details about the Angeles Ranges, see their website: http://www.angelesranges.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Image

Signups start at 7:00am and shooting should start at 8:15am when the line goes hot.
Please arrive at the left side of the Angeles rifle range no later than 7:30am to sign-in and get assigned your shooter numbers.
Your shooters number is also your position on the line so please lineup accordingly.

Match fee is $20 for Caprc members or $30 for non members.
The match fee also includes use of the range after the match is completed.
We usually finish by 1pm.
Bring 70 rounds of match grade ammo.
Be prepared to shoot as close as 10yds and as far as 600yds.
Be prepared to shoot from standing, kneeling, seated, prone and other improvised postions.
Bring a backpack to shoot off of for stages that don't allow a bipod.

This match is open to bolt action and semi-auto rifles from 223 up through 308.
A velocity limit of 3100 fps will be in effect to reduce damage to club-owned steel targets.
Bipods, slings, shooting mats and rear bags are allowed and recommended.
Chamber flags are mandatory and are available from the club if needed.

My Savage isn't even zeroed yet. I'll be bringing Darth.

I'll also bring the Fortner for you to try out. But be forewarned. After you try the Fortner, you'll be spoiled. The accuracy and trigger action are superb of course, but the economy of motion in cycling is incredible:

Image

Your hand will pivot to cycle the bolt, but your hand will pivot on a stationary middle finger. At first it might feel weird and you'll wonder what the big deal is. But fire a box and get used to the Fortner's action and then go back to a turnbolt and the turnbolt will feel crude.

I wouldn't mind having a Blaser. It's a neat gun. I've been tempted in the past but never bought one.

I don't doubt that the Blaser might be faster than a conventional turnbolt, but it still requires a regrip to cycle the action. Unless there's some top secret ninja technique that I haven't seen yet, the hand comes completely off the stock, grasps the knob, cycles the action back and forward, and then regrips the stock and trigger.

This isn't true with the Fortner, where the hand loosens and pivots on the middle finger but largely stays on the stock. The trigger finger pulls the bolt knob rearward and the thumb pushes the bolt shut. The trigger finger goes back on the trigger as the thumb shuts the bolt. Contrast that with something like a T-bolt, where the hand would come off the stock, grab the knob, cycle the action back and forward, and then regrip the stock and trigger.

For centerfires where the bolt throw is necessarily longer and something like a Fortner wouldn't work well, I think I prefer the hand action of the Tubb 2000 to that of Blaser. On the Tubb 2000, the hand loosens and comes off the grip, but the hand largely pivots on the thumb and the action is cycled open, back, forward, and shut with the trigger finger:

The entire hand except the trigger finger regrips as the trigger finger pushes the bolt forward and down. This is a very fluid movement and seems to me more ergonomic and faster than the action on a Blaser.

Of course you can shoot it. It's just as well that the bolt will be on the wrong side for you, because you'll notice less difference between your really nice rifle and the beater Savage that way.

I gotta get that Savage running.

If I remember right:

Stage 1, standing. 10 rounds. 60 seconds.
Stage 2, standing transition to sitting, 2 mags with 2 and 8 rounds; 55 secs
Stage 3, standing transition to prone, 2 mags with 2 and 8 rounds; 60 seconds
Stage 4, prone, 1 mag with 10 rounds; 5 minutes; 2x points

Stage 2 is by far the hardest. A good trick: fire the first round and immediately swap out the mag to save having to rack the 3rd round.

As I am walking out the door to any shooting event, I run this checklist through my head:

Gun
Ammo
Mags
Holster(s)/Belt
Eyes
Ears

For multigun matches, go over that list for EACH gun.
Some guns might not have holsters, but I also include slings, mag pouches or shotshell holders as holsters...
