Are my hands too big for my rifle?

Post by wizdumb »

Relevant rifle info:
Rem 700 SPS Varmint .308
Badger Ord tactical bolt knob
B&C Medalist stock
Timney trigger

To briefly summarize the problem, I don't seem to be able to firmly and fully grip the rifle in the palm of my hand *and* squarely place the pad of my trigger finger at a 90 degree and on the lower portion of the trigger. I've tried holding it many different ways, but it always leads to a compromise of improper trigger finger placement, holding the rifle stock with my fingers instead of my palm, or my hand bumping into the tactical bolt knob.

Is this a common problem, or are my hands just too large? Should I consider a different stock? Maybe I'm just doing it wrong?
I can take some photos if you think it will help to explain the issue better.

Thanks!!

Does this happen when shooting from a bench, prone, all? It could also be from the length of pull for your stock...meaning you may need to have spacers added to the butt stock so the length from the butt stock to trigger is longer. Im about 6'1" and a 14.5" LOP would be ideal (mines a bit too short).

most of us don't fully grip our rifles anyway. Thumb goes up top or on the right side. Finger tips touching front of grip. Trigger finger at 90deg.

Ok, so it sounds like I'm too used to holding the rifle in the traditional fashion with a full grip. Is this a preferred technique for benchrest shooting? Should I adapt different techniques for varmint shooting, or just get used to doing it one way for consistency?

Thanks for the reply!

The ONLY thing that matters is you finger is at a 90 to the trigger and can pull straight back. Build your "grip" from the trigger back not from your grip forward. However your palm amd other fingers land to maintain the 90 is the correct way to hold the gun.
