Too bad I have no land navigation experience. This looks like it would be hella fun.

That looks like one hell of a time. I had no idea that matches like that existed. Where do you guys find all of this information about all of these different matches?

Old school, no GPS, land nav, no problem....... 15 years too old, wife and kids; problem.......

"30 miles" of challenging unfamiliar terrain, at altitude, carrying all your gear for two days...... What are they trying to prove.

That you should not carry something unless you are REALLY going to use it.
God shoots a Remington 700, drives a Chevy Truck and carries a Glock 19.
I don't do any of those things.

The fun trick is picking gear that performs multiple functions such as a poncho for raingear and shelter or a bivy sack and all your clothing for a sleep system. Even looking at this as an extended dayhike without an extra 25 or so pounds of shooting gear it sounds like a deathmarch. If you figure a walking pace of 2.5mph, that works out to 15 hours just walking leaving 9 hours to hurry up and wait, shoot stages, eat, drink, catnap etc.... There should be a morale patch for completing this.

I walked 30miles at higher elevation a few months ago and spent a hell of a lot more to do it. Just to see some rocks the Incas restacked...

A friend and I are seriously talking about doing this one. Backpacking and shooting, sounds like a good time to me, normally they don't let me shoot where I hike.

Good excuses to exercise and practice shooting...

Hi guys,

The 24HSAC obviously isn't your average rifle match. Actually, it's not really a match at all-- it's an adventure race that requires old-school land nav and there will be "sniper" related tasks and challenges along the way. It's not for everyone as it requires a level of physical and mental preparation that most are not willing to try. Just a few weeks after registration opened, we already have 23 teams signed up and training for it, though.

The matches we run out here in the Rocky Mountains are different than most matches elsewhere, and even our simplest one, The Steel Safari (which has been going on since about 1998) requires skills no flat, square-range practice or match will prepare you for.

hope this helps

Zak. What about the Snipers Hide Cup coming up? Would you recommend that match to people as long as they can hike at altitude

The SHC is not designed to be a physical challenge, but the location is at 5000'+ altitude and you will have to walk some, and maybe up and down some small to moderate hills.
