Anybody try LASC smallbore matches?

Post by savagE »

I'm off this Sunday and I'm going to go check out the Small bore Silhouette match at Angeles this Sunday. Has anybody tried one of these out? Looks like it's all NRA style shooting but it looks like it could be cheap fun. I emailed the director to see if I could use one of my 10/22's (one with optics the other one bone stock).

My first paying job was as a smallbore silhouette target setter 25 years ago at WEGC :thumb: It is fun, good practice for offhand shooting.

Was Bob Holmstead running Silhouette back then?

My memory does not go back that far :randall: One of my boy scout leaders was a shooter, has two teenage sons (circa 1985-86) and got me the job. Paid $5, two dognuts, and a 50 rd box of ammo to shoot after the match :)

Was the boy scout leader Scott Dexter?

He was a Boy Scout leader and on the WEGC board about that time.

That doesnt ring a bell. IIRC the scout master was an old guy, Ed Bordenkircher and assistant was Burt or Bud something. This was troop 614 in Upland.

EDIT: I remember! The guys last name was Rentmeester (sp?) The younger son was named Noah, older I think Eric. Thats all I recall. This may have been closer to 1987-88.

LAR&R Whittier Narrows has a rim fire match. 50 yards and 100 yards. Prone with sling or bi pod or front rest.

I checked the LASC rules, and it looks like they don't like the stock that I am running on my 10/22. I have a Fajan, and no OG stock at all.
You will have to tell us how it went.

I emailed the director and he said that the hunter class small bores shoot 1/5 size silhouettes. I went to the Angeles today to practice and I am guessing that at 50 yards they would be shooting at targets the size of those tiny chickens. It wasn't too difficult but the wind was pushing me (and the bullets) around a bit. Rich, what kind of stock do you have on your rifle? I have another stock that I can let you use for the day.

Don't let that hold you up.
Show up, play dumb and tell them you just want to shoot and don't care about having scores submitted to any sanctioning bodies.
I'm 99% sure they will let you shoot with what you brought...

Eddie,
My stock is a Fajan thumb hole stock. Thanks a bunch for the offer of the loaner. I will try to work something next one of their shoots. Did you make it to the shoot after all?

Randall,
thanks for the tip. I will try your suggestion on seeing if they will let you roll that way. I wouldn't care about them reporting my scoring anyhow.

It was really laid back. You score yourself. It was all cowboy type stuff that last sunday. They said the second weekend was their big weekend where everybody comes out, but that's our Sunday (for now). They would let you shoot it if you wanted just they wont count your score. I was surprised how hard it was. My hit rate was around 50% and I was shooting at half size target. They said scoped .22's usually shoot 1/5 sizes which are tiny! These guys have their own 200 yard range where they only shoot silhouettes. It's past that private range where the we had the "A" clinic.
