Its the 1st match in the Precision Rifle Series.... I don't know if any of us are in... Are you shooting the match?

I have no idea how I am doing but would be shocked if I have a 20% hit rate. Humbling match to start the 2012 comp year off. Reminds you of high level of competition you will find at this type of match. It's unlike anything you will experience until you do.

I made a first round hit on a 1050 shot with a 4.2 Mil hold and shooting behind the mover to get hits gives you an idea of the wind. You can't spot 90% of shots and zero coaching is allowed. One fun thing was holding up the wind meter as Glen Seekins was shooting 1100yards (off a truck) and watch it go from 8 to 22 to 8 MPH.

This match is fun stuff. I can't wait to see what the top guys do so I know what to work for.

From the pictures it looks pretty flat, so flat that you have to climb a ladder to see past 500 yards. There's a joke in there somewhere, I just haven't has enough coffee to find it this morning.

Not at all you can't really see it but have a bit of elevation changes no the range. We were (and did) able to get out to 1000+ from the ground. Tower was cool and allowed us to reach some closer targets and far in the same strings. You also have about 3 −5MPH more wind up on it over the ground shots.

Anyway, I ended up about mid pack. Mag failures contained to pleg me as the first day as well and rounds that would not fire, very fluster rating.

Today was in rained and rained some more. Made for a muddy day and this TX mud is some serious mud.

Francis finished 2nd so the west was well represented.

All and all this was a great match on par with the best of the best like TBRC and TPRC.

What kind of misfires were you experiencing?

Mag failures? Did you test them before you left? Or did something get banged up during the match?

Ended up 31st out of 61, not bad seeing that the competition was stiff. I would have mad top 25 with my points that was discarded from a AD.

Kevin put on a great match. I hope this is a match that is held every year.

It was cold and very muddy on day two. It was easier to shoot in the rain to have some perception of what the wind was doing on day two than not seeing anything on day one. Many guys had blown primers and had their rigs take a crap during stages because of the heavy rain on day two.

I did not want to intrude. I will let you know next time.

I had fun shooting with Glen Seekins. When he was shooting on Sat we had the wind meter up showing 8 to 27 back to 8 MPH during his shoot time at 1050. Charlie squad also had guys with all kinds of issues from the rain and mud. I am humbled that the top shooters (like You) can do so well match and match.

They did a great job on this event. I am amazed at the quality of matches available to us now. TBRC, TPRC, Lone star... We really have a great set of matches to shoot. I am going to try and make all the PRS matches this year.

Francis, I have only shot 1 match in significant rain and it took my rifle down... (TPRC last year) Can you see rain at the target blowing? When making a long distance shot, do you use mid-range wind data or wind at the target (assuming a switchy wind)..

Oh btw, congrats on the great finish....

For wind reading what I do is a number of things. Try to absorb as much as you can from your environment and everything around you. First I go off my kestrel. Then look at the grass up close and as far as what my binos or monocular will tell me. I look for movement of leaves on the trees or brush. I also look at the gun smoke from a person shooting before me. I try to feel the wind on my face and try to catch the changes. Look at the smoke from somebody's cigarettes and finally the rain up close and at distance and see what angle it's coming down at with kestrel in hand and constantly looking at the angle of the rain when the wind changes speed or direction. I constantly look through the glass, all in an effort to try to judge the wind speed up close and far. I also have it in my head that for every mile per hour that my bullet will move X inches at a given distance we are planning to shoot or X .mils and dial or hold off accordingly. This should be going through your head constantly when you are just catching a break between your turn to shoot. The more time given to you to read the wind this way, the more you'll react to the wind changes subconsciously and know what your corrections should be without thinking about it. For example, at 1100 yards my hold for my wind @ 8 mph was 1.8 mils. The target was close to 20 inches wide so center to 3 or 9 o'clock was roughly 10 inches. My bullet was moving roughly 10 inches per MPH change so for every change in 1 mph I held off left or right edge or went to .5 mil hold for corrections on a 2 mph wind shift. Luckily the wind direction was a full value from the side at that particular target otherwise I'd be trying to run math in my head for 1/2 or 1/4 value depending on the angles.

I hope this answers your question somewhat. Reading the wind is somewhat of an art rather than a science. It's difficult to master and I am far from thinking I know how to read all the changes...I'm still learning constantly bro.

I usually pay attention to the wind behind me for greatest effect.

The wind at the muzzle will typically have the greatest impact, but you can't just adjust for that alone. A lot can occur from muzzle to target as we're all aware of.

Francis, I missed left and right on the 1100 holding 4 Mil range. Made my 1050s with 3.7 to 4.2 mil holds with a DTAC going 3075. This goes to show the crazy wind at this match. 8 to 25mph at any given time.

I hope to lear to read wind like the top shooters one day.
