Do you lay flat on your stomach and rest the buttstock on the upper part of your shoulder or do you lay on your side(urban sideprone/fetal) and rest buttstock into the pocket of shoulder? I've seen shooters do it both ways and score well on these stages. I prefer to lay on my side(very comfortable) but find that often theres not enough room on firing line so I end up with a hybrid of both.

I lay on my belly, stock resting on top of my shoulder.
I hold the scope's eyepiece with my support hand and the stock with my strong hand.
Elbows on the ground.
The position is much like how you would lay on the ground and use binoculars with your elbows on the ground, except that you pivot your strong hand 90 degrees to be on the stock.
I run the bolt with my weak hand.

I am an urban kind of guy. Just cannot seem to get comfortable the other way..

I lay flat on my stomach. If I lay sideways, I can't seem to get low enough to make that work.

Last time I shot side prone I did it on my side. The bag I was resting my rifle on was pretty tall, so being on my stomach would have required me to hold my torso up way to much. It worked very well for me.

I'm going to have to watch a few people do this . . . I tried last night and I can't get the rifle stable and still see through my scope. Why would anyone ever need to take a shot in this position?

That's the problem, the matches turn into games. It's like shooting a longrange rifle at 20 yards, in real life you would never have a 1/2" target at that range. If all you could see is a 1/2" piece of your target you would never take the shot.

We shoot precision rifles at all different distances, not just longrange.
To call them longrange rifles would exclude shortrange which can be just as challenging as longrange. ;)
Ask anyone that's never shot their 6-24 scope at 15yds how easy a 15yd stage is.
The "game" is all about taking the shooter outside their comfort zone.

I'm glad people complain about certain stages.
It means I'm doing something right.

Laying prone, gun sideways on the shoulder. Tried it other ways and have never been as stable as "homie" style. Though that doesn't preclude splitting your forehead open when shooting like that free recoil...

So I was out practicing side prone today....Got data for 25, 50, and I ran out of eyesight for the 75.....I am unable to see the reticle on the target from the position that I am in....on side....Cannot get a site picture at all in prone, so sideways is better....But I find that the longer I shoot like that, the fainter that the reticle gets....I guess its eye strain...

Damm, getting old sucks....

Oh, and today was a rairity...I saw Connor, Henry, met one other person on the board (cannot remember his name), but did not see Ben.....

Like Randall said... Shooting Side prone and short range forces you to think and understanding how the rifle works. They will make you a better shooter in the end.

Anyway I shoot it prone with the rifle sitting at 90 on my shoulder. Seems to work OK with a bag to rest on. Remember this is a excise in trigger control too.
