CaPRC training day Sunday August 22nd

by AR15barrels
Come on out and join us for our "long range day" on Sunday August 22nd.
We will spend the day past 400yds on steel plates from prone.
You should already have a good 100yd zero and an idea of your come-ups to 1000yds.

We meet-up at a park-and-ride in Newhall and carpool out to the range.
The address is 23628 Newhall Ave.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source= ... 16&iwloc=A
Please note that Newhall Ave used to be called San Fernando Road.
Outdated online mapping and in-car navigation systems still show San Fernando Road, but the sign on the freeway now says Newhall Ave.
There are multiple park-and-rides on Newhall Ave so make sure you arrive at the correct one which is just over 1/2 a mile west of the 14fwy on the north side of the street.

If you plan to attend and you are coming from the south, please arrive at the Newhall park & ride between 7:30am and 7:45am on the morning of the shoot.
We will work out the carpool situation at that time.
We roll out as a caravan at 8:00 sharp and don't wait for late people.
It's about an hour's drive to the shooting location.

Trucks and SUV's are preferred for navigating the 1000yds or so of dirt roads once we arrive at the shooting location.
In the past, passenger cars have made it up the road, but many people are not comfortable on the dirt roads in a car due to the conditions of the dirt roads.
In this case, cars can park just off the asphalt and we will shuttle you up to the shooting position as required.

If you live north of the greater LA area, please PM me for directions on where to meet up with us on the way to the shooting spot.
We should be arriving at the shooting spot right around 9am.

Some things to bring:
Precision rifle wearing a scope with target knobs, eye/ear protection, sunscreen, chamber flag, 60 rounds of match quality ammo, printout from a ballistics program showing your bullet drop in moa or mils as appropriate to your scope, shooting mat or blanket, bipod, some kind of rear bag or sand sock, small notepad to take notes, pencil or pen, laser rangefinder, food & water for 6 hours, backpack or bag to carry everything.
Bring what you have, don't worry too much about what you don't have.
We always make do with what we have.

This is a Precision Rifle event so if the gun/scope/ammo is not capable of shooting tight groups, it will detract from your overall experience at the shoot.
Please have your rifle zeroed at 100yds and your knobs set to zero.
If you need help with this, we can do it at the shoot, but it takes a lot of time that is better spent putting rounds on targets much further away than 100yds.

Semi-autos are welcome as long as they have brass catchers or the shooter employs some other method to eliminate hot flying brass.
Image

A view of the targets from the firing line:
Image

We will be out in the high desert so dress accordingly including a hat and hiking boots as we will sometimes be moving around on steep terrain.
Weather should be somewhere between 30 and 110 degrees.

Some cell phones will work at the shooting spot and we have had 3g service in the past.

Please RSVP in this thread by the Friday before the shoot if you plan to attend.
We need to get an accurate head count of how many to expect.
Non-shooters are welcome of course and you will still learn a bunch even if you are not shooting.
When you RSVP, please make a note to whether you need a ride or if you can give someone a ride that does not have a truck or SUV to make it up the dirt roads.

A $20 donation to the club helps us buy more targets and supplies.

Saturday night is usually a sure thing for me too but this Saturday is the Norco rodeo. I might have to be a little hung over at the spot again

nothing beats cowgirls, ribs, beer, and bucking bulls.

pretty sure it is but good luck.. after a day of high powered rifles going off you'd be lucky to see any yotes near and i've never seen a rabbit out there.

We used to have a place in barstow for rabbits that we would just slaughter them every time for almost 2yrs. Its never been the same since... i think we depleted the population and even they couldn't keep up with the baby makin.

I will be there. (If that is OK with you guys. This is my first post and this Sunday will be my first CaPRC event. If it's not OK, just let me know.)

I don't require a ride to make it up the dirt roads. I'm happy to shuttle people up and down the dirt roads, but it will be slow-going as my truck is a two-seater.

JohnLee, as long as you have a 100 yard zero and have a rough estimate as to what your come ups are out to 1k, then you should be good to go....What are you going to be shooting and what kind of ammo?

I have a solid 100-yard zero. Come-ups at long range are iffy though, as the rifle range I regularly go to is Angeles, which as you know allows paper out to only 200 yards on weekends:

Image

So I'm left to shoot the plates out to 600. I have decent dope out to 600 but obviously I can't "check and spray" the steel targets at Angeles. I've taken shots at rocks and such past the 600-yard plates and gotten very rough dope on those rocks. But that's all I got.

That's one reason I'm looking forward to these CaPRC shoots. I hope you guys will have me.
Gnzrme wrote:What are you going to be shooting and what kind of ammo?
Rifle is an Accuracy International AWP:

Scope is a Schmidt & Bender 10x42:

Reticle:

I don't reload and usually shoot American Eagle M80 ball. It shoots sub-MOA out of my rifle.

If you guys require it, I can bring some American Eagle M1A Match. But it doesn't seem any more accurate through my rifle than the M80 ball. Or at least I'm not good enough to tell the difference.

I would suggest you bring the most accurate ammo you can. Other then that you will be GTG. We can help you get some DOPE out to 1K

I'll be there. I have finally found a load that looks like it shoots well in the SSG and hope it holds up past 400 yards.

If you feel like you meet the requirements in the first post, then come on out.
-100yd zero
-60 rounds of match ammo
-scope with target knobs and enough elevation to reach 1000yds (you need about 40 usable moa of elevation with 308)

Please put me on RSVP, I will take my Jeep, so I can help carry one person up the hill, or if anyone is coming from IE, I can carpool as well.

Thanks,

I would like to come out and shoot, but I don't know if I will have ammo and zeros in time. If I don't get ammo and zero's, I would still like to come check it out. I could get some pointers, rangeing practice, etc.

I'm trying to solve a problem...

Ryan has the club EZ-UPs and will bring them down to the spot at 9:00, but is then leaving at 10:30.
I don't want to drive my POS truck up to the spot f I don't have to.
So, who can run the EZ-UP's back to Ryan's after the shoot?

Maybe a bunch of people will want to go get lunch in Tehachapi as a group after the shoot?
If so, we can drop the shades on the way into town...

Thats fine. Lets just plan on grabbing lunch in Tehachapi then. I'm sure we will finish fairly quick tomorrow with the heat.

Hope you guys are having fun and not sweating to death!

I at least made it out to Angeles on Friday to get the Tikka/Myself back in action. After 2.5 months or however long I've been inactive, she still holds true, 5 shot group at 100.

The weather was great. With the easy ups it was very comfortable.
Thanks to Randall and everyone that makes these shoots happen.
Special thanks to Ryan for spending the time getting me lined out so I could shoot.
Nice getting to meet everyone.
