CAPRC Marksmanship Clinic "B" 4-26-15

by AR15barrels
Come on out and join us at Angeles for the 2nd part of our new precision rifle shooter series of clinics on Sunday April 26th.
This shoot will have you gathering dope from a 100yd zero out to 600yds as well as work on spotting and calling shots and making corrections from calls.
We will be continuing with using the features of the scope and how to make accurate soft dope from your hard dope using ballistics software.
You need to have attended (as a shooter) one of our former "A" clinics in order to attend this clinic as a shooter.
We will limit this to 20 shooters so that those shooters can get maximum range time.
Fees are $75 for non members or $50 for club members.
The entry fee covers the classroom sessions, cold drinks and BBQ lunch and your use of the range for the rest of the day after the clinic is over.
Plan on a full day as the schedule has us shooting until at least 3pm.
You may participate as a non-shooter, observe the shooting portion of the day and join us for the BBQ for a reduced $25 non-shooter fee.

Image

Tentative schedule as follows:
7:15 Sign-in
7:30 Classroom session on the firing line.
8:15 line goes hot. verify, correct and zero knobs at 100yds (5-10 rds)
10:00 open shooting time with instruction as needed
12:00 BBQ lunch break
1:00 open shooting time with instruction as needed

Some things to bring:
Precision bolt rifle wearing a scope with target knobs, eye/ear protection, sunscreen, chamber flag, 80 rounds of match quality ammo, printout from a ballistics program showing your bullet drop in moa or mils as appropriate to your scope, shooting mat or blanket, bipod, some kind of rear bag or sand sock, small notepad and a pencil or pen to take notes.
Bring what you have, don't worry too much about what you don't have.
We always make do with what we have.

This is a Precision Rifle event so if the gun/scope/ammo is not capable of shooting 1moa groups, it will detract from your overall experience at the shoot.
Please have your rifle zeroed at 100yds and your knobs set to zero before you arrive on the day of the shoot.
We will verify a correct zero at the shoot, but it takes time that is better spent putting rounds on targets.

We are also looking for our experienced club members to show up and help instruct.
If you are able to help on the line, please RSVP anytime.

RSVP's for CaPRC club member shooters will be accepted after 12 noon on Friday 4/3/15.
RSVP's for non club member shooters will be accepted after 12 noon on Friday 4/10/15.
Any RSVP's posted before those times will be ignored or deleted.

Just booked my hotel for this class. Trying to get my re-loads dialed in so that I can shoot them at the class and get some good dope. Definitely looking forward to this one :)

Just wanted to throw this out there for some of the beginners that are reloading, I highly suggest you complete load development if you haven't already before attending this clinic, it will maximize your benefit from this clinic. If you are using factory match ammo, disregard my comment ^_^

Thanks for the advice Bruce. I am Frantically working to get enough range time before the 25th. Had to leave town for a week unexpectedly, which put a dent in those plans. It did allow me to drop my rifle off at Timney for a new trigger though, which is a bonus :) I think I can still cram enough range time in to get a handle on my load for Varget before then. I was hoping to dial in a load for 4064 as well so that I can decide which one to get dope for. I think Varget is the better choice either way, so that's the one I went with first, but I always like to have choices.

Go with Varget. I tried IMR 4064 and found that it shot very poor out of my rifle. My advice is save your time and just stick with Varget.

^I agree with Larry, stick with Varget, this is also the advice many of the experienced shooters told me as well. I know its hard to find, but there is a reason why its hard to find!

Agreed. On top of that if you're shooting factory 700 in 308 you don't have to do much load development. Go with 43.5gr Varget, 175smk loaded to 2.81 and you're ready to rock.

Too bad I wasn't able to attend clinic A, otherwise I'd attend this one.

Also, I keep reading people using 43.x gr of varget or 4064 for 175 smk. What brass are we talking about here? I am new to this, but with PPU brass, I was having pressure signs even at 41.5 4064, br2, 2.81 coal out of a factory 700. And where do you get your varget? I have a hard time finding it.

My sweet spot seems to be @ 44.3gr of Varget. No signs of pressure at all. I am loading 175gr SMK's. I am still working on seating depth. 2.865 is .0010 off the lands. I have 10 loaded at 2.860, 2.865, and 2.870 to see what groups the best.

I just got some Lapua brass and am hoping to find some varget soon so I'll work up a load. What primers and brass are most of you using?

I used black hills (winchester) brass with no issues.. Usually CCI or win primers. I was in the high 42. grains varget.

Win Brass, CCI LR Primers, 175 SMK, 44.5g Varget with no pressure signs. Recently did a test @ 44.8 and still no significant pressure issues

For those still looking for VARGET, there is a guy on CALGUNS that just listed (15) 1# jugs of Varget @ $35/pound -or- $33/pound if you buy 5. Not the best price, but it will get you started if you're in need for the Clinic.

ETA: His location is listed as the San Fernando Valley

Something came up last minute and I don't think I'll be able to make it to this Clinic B. Hopefully you guys will be able to have another one in the near future. Wish I could make it. Please free up my spot for anyone else that wants to attend...
