This is simiar to Mike's match I shot in Tehachapi last year, very fun! I'm excited I'll actually get to shoot two big matches before the end of the year.

I am seriously thinking about doing this match it looks ,I contacted
Mike a couple of days ago he said there are still spots available , since the
Registration started I believe Nov. first.

It's the same ranch we shot on so lots of 800-1200Y cross canyon shooting. Nothing like it in the state. I sent my app today.

Id love to shoot a match like this maybe next year.

The area in those pictures looks familiar.

I have hunted varmints "east of Bakersfield" for years on friends' ranches.

This match was awesome! You guys (except Rich and Ryan) missed out on what might be the best "big" match in CA. Since this was my first 2 day event I'm actually quoting some of the members of the GAP and Surgeon team I overheard. Lots of creative stages, the last one was very unique.

I two more videos including one of Rich I'll post a little later. I got 22nd out of 45 which was not too bad considering the competition. I had a real blast shooting at the Loop Ranch and all that distance and angle fire was challenging even on 12" plates.

I've heard over and over it was one of the most unique, fun matches of the year. I can't believe more of the SoCal guys did not shoot it. Almost sad when you have top talent flying across the county to shoot a match in your back yard.

I know a lot of shooters cleaned a lot of stages which makes it fun.

Congratulations to my teammates and friends on the great finishes. One thing to note is 1st and 2nd were tied as was 3rd and 4th with all four only a few points apart.

That match was definitely awesome. Big thanks to Mike Voight, Surefire, and all the RO's and all of the help at the Loop Ranch. The course of fire was fun. It was an all steel match in some really beautiful rolling hills. The wind was definitely the X factor, and the targets were all very clear, and easy to determine impacts on. They fed us so well at the ranch, the Texans were taking pictures of all the food to send home to their wives! I will have some video as well, once I upload it from the camera.

Yup, I must not have gotten the bolt all the way back to pick up the next round, then I got a double feed. Finally, cleared it and missed! Got the last round on target right on the buzzer, they were nice enough to give it to me

Big thanks to Mike, Dal, all the ROs, helpers, etc. They put on an event that was easily in my top 3 funnest matches of all time.

My GAP 6 Creedmoor was an absolute hammer. It was almost like I couldn't miss the first day. We went out shooting Friday and my rifle was still a little inconsistent (after Vegas). George looked it over, told me what was wrong, and it was a tack driver again. Word to the wise, clean ALL the shit out of your muzzlebrakes, all the time. Beyond building a great rifle, the ability to accurately diagnose problems from symptoms is something he seems to do pretty damn well. He saved my ass this match.

Hopefully this turns into a yearly event. This is one match never to miss.

Ryan, can you shed some more light on your muzzle brake issue for us?? Good job this weekend too, BTW.

If it's anything like my 6.5x47L then after 250-300 rounds enough carbon builds up on the crown to open up the groups just a tad. The muzzle brake design and timing may have something to do with it because the Badger FTE brake on my .308 has never had this issue but the turned down RAD brake on the 6.5 does. It's not a big deal to clean just something to keep on top of and check before a big match.

Carbon was building up in my thruster brake. I cleaned like normal down the barrel and out the muzzle but neglected going in laterally through the ports. Well there was enough buildup on the last port that after cleaning, it would shoot well. Very quickly thereafter it would become inconsistent. Existing carbon promotes more carbon to be attracted to it and in that vicious cycle, I began getting bullet strikes on the carbon.

From here on out I'm switching to mini FTE brakes (full size for the 6.5 saum) for easy removal and cleaning.

Hit up nate if you guys want to order some mini FTEs. I'm probably gonna have nate order me a couple for myself.

The reason that carbon builds up so much in the 3rd port is that the pressure is too low to wipe it clean.
Note that most of the effectiveness of the brake is from there the high pressure is at.
Also note that there is very little carbon build up in the ports closest to the muzzle...

The mini brakes worked decent but there's still a noticeable difference between my 243 with the mini brake and now with the JEC brake. I tried them both hand tight on my last barrel before i had the new one spun up and the difference was clear. The mini brake was still effective though and nice in that it hardly looked like like a brake was even present on the rifle. I also tried the last barrel with no muzzle brake and you could definitely feel the mini brake.

I'm switching to the mini FTE because i don't want to keep contouring new brakes to new barrels. I figure 1 FTE should last a while. The RAD brake would work too but i think the slightly larger Badger would be more effective.

Also, i think Ryan has a Surefire 2-port brake on his rifle. I tried a surefire on my 243 too and it wasnt much more effective then the mini brake. I think the smaller surface area of the Surefire is its weakness.

Muzzle brakes work on two principles:

-Redirecting the rocket-motor effect of the expanding gases
-Using the energy of the expanding gases to physically push the brake forward

Most muzzlebrakes do the first; the better designs also do the second. However for the redirecting of the gases to be most effective the port area must be matched to the gas volume to keep the velocity high. So the ports of a muzzlebrake should actually get smaller as they get farther from the muzzle. I've actually designed a couple prototypes for Open Class pistols... worked too well and the pistols would not cycle because there wasn't effort recoil.

The JP Tank brake works so well because it has a very large area for the gases to be trapped against as they expand and very large port areas so the gases can be expelled. When you turn the brake down to match the barrel contour, you're reducing it's effectiveness.
