Kestrel calibration questions...

I've got a Kestrel 4000NV and want to make sure I've got everything set up properly.

It's not clear to me if I'm supposed to set the reference altitude to a known altitude for some location, or set it to 0. My altitude, according to Google Maps is 181 feet. So I set the reference altitude to 181.

But I came across some internet forums that stated in order to get an accurate DA reading, reference altitude should be set to 0 since DA is based on station pressure. I guess if you don't set reference altitude to 0, it throws off the station pressure reading?

Google Maps indicates the altitude for Angeles Shooting Range is 1650 feet. Am I supposed to always reset the reference altitude to a known value for the location I am shooting at before getting a reliable DA reading?

I'm confused! Can someone set me straight?

Thanks!

I'm setting my 4500 nv. do you have to set both values or just one of the two. Seems like when I set one value it affects the other. Is this normal? what am I doing wrong?

Both numbers effect the other value.
Set both if them if you want the others to be accurate.

This is what the altitude screen looks like when I set the reference pressure to 29.92

And this is what the baro screen looks like when i set the reference altitude to 0

What altitude were you at when you took the pictures?

Google earth had me at 71 feet. Just checked again at my house. Google earth has me at 1030 ft and kestrel has me at 1045. What do you think Randall?

I think that's holy crap accurate!
If it's within a few hundred feet of your actual altitude, you are fine.
