When setting up steel targets for practice, or at a match for that matter, is there a rule of thumb for target size?
Sizes for positional, barricade, supported, etc. I understand smaller is better, but are there real world guidelines?
Thanks
Bob

Prone with lots of time .75 to 1MOA
Prone limited time 1.5MOA
Positional: 2 to 3 MOA
Barricades and likes: 1.5 to 2MOA

my experience running matches is a little different...
Prone with lots of time 1 to 1.5MOA
Prone limited time 2 to 2.5 MOA
Barricades and unconventional supported positions: 3 to 4 MOA
Unsupported Positions: 3 to 5 MOA depending on position.
It's best to practice with smaller steel, but when it comes to sizing the targets according to the difficulty, we generally try for a size so that 1/3 to 1/2 of the shooters will be hitting it.
If more than 2/3 of the shooters are hitting it, it's probably too big.
If less than 1/3 are hitting it, it's probably too small.

We are in the same place. I would want to practice with smaller targets that a match.

We shot a cold bore at the last match that only 1 out of 17 hit.... it was 8" at 400 yards, so 2 MOA.....

We have shot a coldbore before that was a 6" wide by 8" tall flapper at 400 and had a lot more hits.
The morning wind was screwing with people on the coldbore...
