Well part of shooting well as with many things in life is getting or staying into shape. I am about to turn 30 in seven months and think I might be in the worst shape of my life. Motivation is the hardest part of sticking with a workout or training program. I think I found my motivation this week when my uncle dropped off some stuff and I found a pic of my grandpa. If he could look like this at over 40 it's time for me to get of my ass.

Height: 5' 9 ½"
Weight: 220 lbs.
His measurements included
Arms, 19 ½",
Chest, 50",
Waist 32",
Thighs, 25 ½",
Calves, 18".
Forearms,18"
Lifts:
570 lb. Bench press
600 lb. Squat
250 lb. Standing barbell curl
His contest history (3):
1958 Mr. Northern California 1st
1958 Jr. Mr. America 3rd (Western section)
1958 Mr. America 9th
1959 IFBB Mr. America 1st
1960 IFBB Mr. Universe 1st
1966 Mr. Olympia 3rd (won by Larry Scott)
1967 Mr. Olympia 2nd (won by Sergio Oliva)
1967 NABBA World Championships 1st
1968 Mr. Northern California 1st
1968 IFBB Mr. World 1st (The Mr. Olympia was held the same day, and had also taken time to perform strongman stunts.)
1970 IFBB Mr. Universe 2nd (medium class)(Arnold won 1st)
1974 Mr. Pacific Coast 1st (over-40 class)
I spend a lot of time on this forum and hopefully it will server as a reminder to get the gym and train.

I don't have quite the genetic history you have, but about 3 months before I turned 30, I had a younger friend tell me condescendingly that I'd never have a 6 pack again. Needless to say for the next 3 months, I worked out 5 times a week and only ate subway sandwiches. I dropped 3 pant sizes and lost about 25 pounds in about a month and a half. In the end, I was able to cut enough fat to see a six pack and felt great for my 30th birthday.
Then that winter I hit the terrain park at snow summit and hit a jump and completely cleared the transition. I landed on ice and the board got out from under me. So I essentially hit the deck from about 10-13 feet. Cracked 2 ribs and had crazy back pain. Couldn't work out for about 6 months and I lost it all. After that, I haven't had any motivation to work out like that again. But I need to get back into it as well. 24 called and said I need to renew.

I just went through this this past year, my grandfather had a heart attack at 44 and died, I didn't want the same thing happening to me.
At the beginning of the year I was 200lbs, borderline type 2 diabetic, with high blood so I saw my Dr. and asked what I could do about it.
His answer...loose weight!! So after following a strict diet and exercise (the Insanity work out and running 2-3 miles every other day), I'm down to a trim 155lbs, with no signs of diabetes or high blood!
Basically cut all my portions to a 1/3rd, cut back on all carbs and sweets and added daily exercise. That's my routine nowadays, and I feel great! My motivation, is feeling good!
And I've noticed that my shooting has improved due to being in better shape, plus under all that fat, my wife noticed that there are some abs under there, lol!
Charlie do it when you're young, cause when you're in your 40's it's a lot harder to do!!
Good luck! Just so you know, I'm a lazy fuck, so if I can do it, anyone can!!

For BJJ, functional strength is more important than mass and power. Check p90x or Crossfit stuff. It kicks some ass.

I just went through the same thing at age 52. Last year I was 260 Lbs with high blood sugar but no blood pressure problems (thankfully). Under a strict program from my doctor of diet and exercise I'm down to 185 Lbs now but I still struggle with Type 2 diabetes (my A1C is still around 10 with no sugars and very little carbs). The doctor say it should get better if I improve my cardio health but after 7 knee operations and a torn rotator cuff in my shoulder (can't lift my arm above my shoulder) it gets hard to to anything aerobic.

And I agree with your last sentence, left on my own, I wouldn't do anything.

I'm on week 2 of P90X and my stomach has already flattened out a lot. It is a great workout system and the workouts kick ass and are actually pretty fun.

Ryan, I could not agree more... I will not be working to get larger but improve strength, endurance and explosiveness. I want to get back to competing at 167 (with Gi) so the put me at a constant weight of 165.
Took my measurements and weight this AM to track my results of the next six months of so.
Week 0 - 12-09-2010
Weight: 180 lbs
Neck:16.25
Chest: 41
Waist: 37
Thigh: 23 .5
Calf 15
Arm 13.5
