Well I certainly wouldn't say "expert".

No. I think the word your looking for is "competent" or "meets the minimum standards." The average cop is not a gun guy, if they qual thats the only goal, and expert or pro are the last thing one should call them. The rare exception is exceptional or expert. Not cop bashing, just pointing out what i've seen training with, and training cops.

The majority of Local, State and Federal LEO's carry a duty firearm as a requirement of the job. They practice/qualify only when they have to. Even supposed SWAT/ESU/TAC Unit personnel aren't very savvy when it comes to gun handling. Disturbing but true.

So if this occured at ASR on a thursday afternoon involving a LAPD officer.... I wonder if it was.....SWAT?? They are there every other thursday on the rifle line and it occurs on my thursday off which yesterday would have been a day off if I wasn't working the light duty shifts. So, its a very good possibility that this was a SWAT officer..... Don't know the circumstances surrounding the event, but guns usually only go off when something presses the trigger.....

I've been on a couple of runs where cops shot themselves in the leg and one where he blew the light bar off the roof of his patrol car when his 12 gu went off while he was still inside the car trying to get out. We got called because he went deaf for a while.

It did not occur on a Thursday. It occurred around 10AM om Tuesday the 31st. I can check, but I doubt the officer was with SWAT.

That is a pretty common phenomenon often referred to as "glock leg." Happens often when people stupidly handle polymer pistols with no safeties like the glock as an example.

Word around the station is actually more in line with what the article said though. They were practicing shooting and then moving behind cover and he fell during the movement. The lesson to be learned from the story remains the same, keep your booger hook off the bang switch until your ready to pull it.

The 6 people I have heard of shooting themselves in the leg have all been from this same technique. It's lack of focus, being unconsciously incompetent with their firearm. (the most dangerous state).

Another safety tip is if you drop your gun don't try to catch it as it falls, picked that one up at Cameron's Action Pistol Match. Might be good to include in the safety briefing on matches involving movement.

BIG +1........ Better yet think twice about doing anything that will compromise control of your weapon.
