New to CaPRC wanted to say hello

Post by Biggins151 »

I've been a member of CalGuns for a bit and want to start working on long range shooting, so I decided to sign up over here as well! I've never really done any distance shooting, but I have a savage 10 fcp in 308 with a HS precision stock that Randall is going to do some work on with in the next few weeks and from there I hope to start learning the basics off that. I really would like to build a custom 6.5 Creedmoor but the .308 will have to due until I can save up the funds.

Moneys a little tight now due to recent purchases, but I hope to be able to head out and meet some of you guys and participate in one of the matches ( even though this rookie is little intimidated :? ) or sign up for one of the A clinics in the up coming future.

Until then, I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself.

Welcome to the forum Biggins151. I have a feeling my good buddy Rich C. is going to love you by your screen name.

There is nothing wrong with shooting a 308. There are still a few people in the club who use it. Come out and shoot our monthlies. It's the best way to learn. There will be plenty of guys to help you out along the way.

I was also thinking could I just swap out my savage 308 barrel for a 6.5 creedmoor and thats it? I'm have a single stage press that should I should be getting soon and am signed up for the reloading class in Long Beach this sunday. My question would is, would you guys just suggest purchasing a 6.5 barrel and then dies and to begin reloading there instead of starting with a .308? Or just keep the 308 and spend the $$ on more ammo, dies & components and begin reloading for what I have.

Welcome. Shoot out that barrel first. By the time you do, you SHOULD be at a level of proficiency where re chambering to 6.5 will actually matter. A better cartridge doesn't mean squat if you can't shoot for shit. If you somehow get convinced to shoot a 6.5 right out of the gate, do yourself a favor and get a Remington 700 or clone action and build it off that. I started with a howa 308. Sold it and picked up a 5r. Shot the shit out of it and have moved on. 6.5 is a better cartridge but like all other cartridges, it doesn't find its mark on its own. I like shooting .308 so much that I'm rebarreling my 5r in .308 again.....and I plan to shoot it at every match that Bruce is shooting.

is there anywhere to buy stripped stock 700 actions new? Or would you suggest finding a used 700 and just stripping it down to the action. I wish I could afford to spend 1k on a surgeon or another high end company but I think truing a stock 700 action is what ill end up doing.

EDIT: Found some on Brownells for 500, but at that price wouldnt it almost be better to buy a new/used sps and sell the stock & barrel (rem 700 sps new at buds gun shop for $580)?

Welcome! Get in on the Bartlein barrel group buy. By the time the barrels arrive (if it happens) you'll be proficient enough to switch out to a 6.5creedmoor.

Shoot what you have now and save your money for your future build. Like Ben said use your 308 to practice your fundamentals.

It will end up costing around the same to properly true a 700 action as it would to buy a custom action.

I have done both.

I figure I could buy a new 700 SPS for 600 sell off the stock and barrel for a little bit of $$ and then see if Randal can true it for me at $120. So even without selling off the items from the stock gun it will come in around 720 for the trued action. Which is is almost $300 less than a custom action. Is the custom action really worth the extra $300 or is that money better spent somewhere else?

I wish I had the $$ to do so. As of now all my $$ is going to a new scope and more ammo. I really want a Bushnell HDMR with the G2 reticle, but its gonna be a little bit until I can save the $$ for that.

Is that with or without a PTG oversized bolt?

Your money will be better spent for truing once you have a new barrel for the action. You will probably want a bottom metal as well. PTG makes great dbm's at a great price point.

Welcome!

Use what you have and shoot the shit out of it. I have a stock Rem 700 308 and shoots a little less MOA and it is going strong with about 2,200 rounds down the tube. Also, shooting local matches does require a tricked out custom rig.

Also, start looking at scopes. I would suggest getting the best scope you can afford.

Thanks for all the help and advice. As of now all my money is going towards ammo until I get my press and a scope soon. I really want to just buy a nice scope off the bat but it is gonna take me some time to save up for the hdmr. I looked as the scope page and saw a few options, but am still a bit indecisive. I have a 4-16 ffp scope from primary arms with the acss reticle but since I purchased it I realized it's not what I'm looking for at all. I'll probably put that up for sale / trade and see what I can get.

You are missing the part where you buy a new $200 bolt to properly fit into the trued action.
We generally don't re-use the bolt when truing an action as it would be so sloppy that there would be no notable benefit from truing.

In the grand scheme, truing accounts for very little of a gun's performance.
The BARREL is where it's at.
Get a GOOD barrel.
Have it put on so it fits the receiver and ammo perfectly and it will shoot.

I don't do any of those things.

Bring it! I don't want a freebie anyway!

That being said, welcome to the club Biggins! I'm one of the guys who still shoot .308, don't feel intimidated by any of us, I just started this year, and its a learning process. These guys gave you really sound advice, shoot your 308 til you have the principles down. I've been shooting since January, and I'm still working on fundamentals.

Money is tight for me too so I get where you are coming from, but save your money, get good glass and good dies. Try to go on match days or practice days. Having someone teach you will save you a lot of money and time in ammunition. Also make sure you have good rings/base and torque it properly, or your zero will fly all over the damn place, I wasted my first some ~70 rounds because I didn't loctite my base/rings.

Hi Ben,

I thought 308 has a few thousands rounds of barrel life. How many rounds did it take to burn the 5R barrel? What was the grouping at the end of its life?

I also like 308, great balance of versatility, performance and barrel life.

A Defiance Deviant is around $1400, but you can get a standard Defiance action with a separate rail and recoil lug for under $1000.

Then there are these for $750 when the group buy is on:

I have been following the group buy, it's been a huge cluster F*** of angry people because of problems with PTG. Someone had theirs shipped to the wrong town, another guy received a rusted bolt. Delivery date was supposed to be June, Owner says he'll never do another group buy again, and will be lucky if his shop can make it through this debacle =\
