Once a year, we put on a series of shoots where you can come out and get an introduction to long range precision rifle shooting. The ultimate goal of our club is to get more people involved with organized precision rifle competitions. We hope to accomplish this goal by gathering up new precision rifle shooters and assisting/mentoring/training them until such time that they have a firm grasp of the required skills and are ready to shoot matches. We run our new shooter introduction and our precision and positional shoots at Angeles Ranges as it's convenient for most in the Los Angeles area. For our longrange shoot, we go to a range up in Kern County with paper targets out to 1000 yards. The longrange shoot is a great opportunity to stretch your rifle's legs as most public ranges don't have targets past about 600yds. We now have four Clinics: Clinic "A" will be our "new precision rifle shooter introduction". We will teach proper position behind the gun and the scope as well as use of the scope and it's features. Then we will check and adjust zero. This is a pure fundamentals of marksmanship course which will all be shot in prone at 100yds. Course of fire "A" is be recommended for new shooters without a proper zero and is a pre-requisite to course of fire B, C and D. Clinic "B" will be a dope gathering session out to 600yds with an emphasis on calling your shot and spotting for a partner out to 600yds from the prone position. Course of fire "B" requires that the shooter already has a solid zero and knows the fundamentals taught in course of fire "A". Clinic "C" will be will go through the conventional unsupported positions of offhand, kneeling and seated and then some improvised supported positions such as barricades, props and side-prone. Course of fire "C" requires that the shooter has completed course of fire "A". Clinic "D" will be longer range targets from 600 out to 1000yds, all prone. Course of fire "C" requires that the shooter already has a solid zero and has completed course of fire "A". Tentative 2016 Clinic Dates: Sunday, 4/17/16 Clinic "A" New Precision Rifle Shooter Introduction Sunday, 4/24/16 Clinic "B" Midrange targets Sunday, 5/1/16 Clinic "C" Unsupported & improvised positions Sunday, 6/5/16 Clinic "D" Longrange Targets |

Is this restricted to bolt action only or do you allow practice with precision built AR15's? |

Randall, in the future can we make the 1000yd steel smaller? I found that being as big as it is really didn't do much to help me learn in the wind. Sure i was hitting it, but was it on the left side? The right side? Perfect windage? IDK cause that thing is HUGE!! The 800 had the same problem only not as bad. Still probably a good .5mil of error that you have no clue if it was good and center or on the edge. What is the typical sizes found at all distances in a good match? Is the ol' 1moa rule the standard or maybe 1.5moa?? Im talking height & width |

Post subject: | Re: Our monthly train-up shoots |
How big is the target at 1000 yards right now? It all depends on the wind too. I have shot at pendleton where I was able to keep pretty much everything in the 9's and 10's and score quite a few x's but the wind was 5mph or less. I went out to the desert this last friday and shot 1000 yards and the wind was super switchy and any anywhere from 5 to 15mph gusts. Shooting a .243 at 1000 is definitely not the end all be all laser cartridge everyone says it is. Past 700 yards there is a big change in how much the wind pushed it around. At 600 yards it was grouping in a 4" pattern in a light breeze consistently. Too easy really but at 1k one moment I would have to holt 1.5 MOA off the right and the next 2.0 MOA off the left and you couldnt even feel the wind change. The mirage wasnt very readable so I was getting a lot of misses. When the wind died down I put 5 rounds into a 6 inch group back to back. On other days where there is no wind, drilling a 15" plate at 1k every time is child's play. |

I was happy just to hit the damn thing with my 308 but couldn't hit it consistently. I suck at reading wind too! Maybe some flags would help downrange? (excuses, excuses) It's been awhile since I joined you guys at the spot so looking forward to the next one. |

When I shoot at Cuyama, the targets are 72" or 6'. I am shooting a 155 2156 bullet and in a 10mph crosswind, it has an 84" drift (or so I was told) so you better be good at reading wind as you will get blown off the target very easily.... 10mph winds are not that rare at that sight, so I like to go out there and shoot.... |

Newbie here: I hope it's not a problem to come out to the next shoots (A and B) even though my rifle is only zeroed to 150yds. And no, I don't want you guys wasting your shooting time helping me! I just don't want to wait until June 27 to begin the "watch and learn" process. |

Er...I meant 100yrd.... my mind was on work with pixels and such - so much for multi-tasking... But I would definitely like to re-zero it to make sure with knowledgeable people to assist ...so I'll make sure to come out to the next "C" course. |

Agreed... these are more for bolt guns but I guess high-end semis would work... still a different beast though. |

I will, when I'm done with the semis. I want to build one like this, I think it's a 300 win mag. Those DTAs are cool to. http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/politi ... ideosearch |

Randall, is it correct that this months shoot will be on Saturday the 22nd instead of the usual Sundays, or is that just a typo? |

Yup, 27th it is. Randall usually starts the thread a week beforehand if i remember correctly (falling asleep so i wont bother to check). It falls on my girlfriends birthday this month, she said I can go, but it might be wiser of me to miss this shoot and score some points. I'm sure sometime there's going to be something bigger down the road like a match that I want to go to that conflicts with something else and this way I'll be able to say "remember when I missed a shoot for your birthday?" |
