The California Precision Rifle Club is proud to announce their next centerfire match will be Sunday February 14th at the Angeles Ranges.

This match is open for all whom still remain in control of their testicles enough to at least get the morning off to play on this Hallmark holiday.

For details about the Angeles Ranges, see their website: http://www.angelesranges.com

Image

Signups start at 7:30am and shooting should start at 8:15am when the line goes hot.
Please arrive at the left side of the Angeles rifle range no later than 7:45am to sign-in and get assigned your shooter numbers.
Your shooters number is also your position on the line so please lineup accordingly.

Match fee is $10 for Caprc members or $30 for non members.
The match fee also includes use of the range after the match is completed.
We usually finish by 1pm.
Bring 70 rounds of match grade ammo.
Be prepared to shoot as close as 10yds and as far as 600yds.
Be prepared to shoot from standing, kneeling, seated, prone and other improvised positions.
Bring a backpack to shoot off of for stages that don't allow a bipod.

This match is open to bolt action and semi-auto rifles from 223 up through 308.
A velocity limit of 3200 fps will be in effect to reduce damage to club-owned steel targets.
Bipods, slings, shooting mats and rear bags are allowed and recommended.
Chamber flags are mandatory and are available from the club if needed.

Line helper RSVP's will be accepted anytime.
Member RSVP's will be accepted anytime.
Non-member RSVP's will be accepted anytime.

Please RSVP by posting "I am in" or "I will be there" as we will ignore "maybe" or "if" RSVP's.
If you RSVP and later figure out that you can't come, please post that as well so we can keep the RSVP list current.

I would have liked to but it is also my eldest's 15th birthday so I'm looking at a reduction in ball size. Well at least I can get another practice day in before the next match in 2 months time.

Just to be certain, do these matches take place at the main range right by the office/shop, or is it on one of the other ranges on the property?

Thx.

At the main range. At the far left a section will be reserved. Face the office, hang a left, all the way to the end.

Far left side of the main rifle range.
Do NOT sign in at the main range office.
You sign-in with the club and pay the club and then the club pays the range.

All,

This was my first match, and only the 4th outing with my rifle. Although my score was absolutely terrible, I had a fantastic time and can't thank the organizers enough for putting together this great event. I came into this event simply looking to gain a little experience. I had no illusions of grandeur. Clearly I have a lot to learn, and I haven't stopped thinking about the match and how I can do better next time. Nothing like a little pressure to help sort out what really works and doesn't work with respect to one's gear and approach.

A few newby reflections. . .

By biggest problem by far was finding the actual target, particularly on those stages where you shifted between targets, or when there was no prep time. On one stage, I never actually found it and didn't get off a single shot in the available time. A lot of points to be gained as I sort out that issue. Couple easy solutions for that one.

Weakside shooting was very problematic for me. I'd never actually attempted this before, and the big challenge for me was getting settled over the rifle from this side. Definitely need to practice that one.

Non-supported shooting with the sling also needs practice. I was ridiculously shaky on that stage.

My DOPE was good, but utilizing it under pressure and time constraints was very different than on a normal day at the range when you have all the time in the world.

Bottom line, I had a great time and the folks at the match could not have been any friendlier in dealing with this newby.

Look forward to the next time.

Cheers,

schills

p.s. Can someone post a pick of the order of fire? Mine copy blew away at some point.

A common newbie mistake is to shoot with the scope turned up to max magnification.
Turn it down to about half power and things get much easier...

Half the problem is identifying your weaknesses. Now you just have to work on them. Keep shooting and it will all come together.

Well, my first match I was last place. Second match last place. Third match last place. Fourth match, I wasn't last, I was second to last. Felt good too!

I usually shoot the stages where the targets are spread out at around 10X to 12X or so. Sometimes I push it to 15X but that is if I've had time to really scope out where they are and have prep time. On no prep time stages, then 10X.

I like to take a mental picture of the targets just before starting. I look for landmarks I can see by eye first that can give me a good starting point to get on target.
The large target letters help tremendously, just remember to shoot the right one!

The large target letters help tremendously, just remember to shoot the right one!

And remember that the letters are NOT the target.
The target is NEAR the letter.

It happens...

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for running the match, it was a blast and I had a ton of fun. It was my first match as well and I made a ton of mistakes that looking back on we're dumb. Pulling the trigger when I mentally knew I shouldn't have. Forgetting to dial dope, dialing the wrong dope, trying to fight the clock. Weak side was a nightmare. I learned a ton though and let's see how next time goes after lots and lots of dry fire.
